Sleep apnea is a chronic usually ongoing condition that disrupts your sleep because you experience one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. This can move you from a deep sleep into a light sleep. When a person as sleep apnea they usually have breathing pauses that can last from just a few seconds to minutes and normally breathing starts again (with a loud snort or choking sound).
